Chi possiede una benché minima cultura scientifica sa associare al nome di Boltzmann due famose leggi fisiche: l'equazione fondamentale della teoria cinetica dei gas e il secondo principio della termodinamica, quello, per intenderci, dell'entropia e della «morte termica» dell'universo.

Ma il geniale scienziato austriaco è tanto citato quanto poco conosciuto: basti pensare che i suoi scritti più significativi non sono mai stati pubblicati in Italia. A questa lacuna vuole ovviare il volume che qui presentiamo. Si tratta di un'ampia selezione tratta dai "Populare Schriften", una raccolta di articoli divulgativi che Boltzmann scrisse tra il 1886 e il 1904, e che fu stampata a Lipsia l'anno prima della sua morte. Gli argomenti trattati sono molti, dai temi di ricerca a lui più cari - come la termodinamica - a questioni di carattere metodologico e generale. Ne risulta un quadro completo, che dovrebbe aiutare a far conoscere uno dei massimi protagonisti della scienza contemporanea, le cui intuizioni sono ancor oggi alla base di tutte le teorie termodinamiche.
